Executive Personal Branding Supports Your First 90 Days in a New Leadership Role

Knowing what you stand for is foundational to success in every transition.

When you Google “the first 90 days as a leader,” you’ll get a lot of advice. But the truth is, doing executive personal branding based on the ETA™ process from Revealing Genius will be foundational to your success with any leadership transition, no matter what advice you follow.

When you do the Google search for advice for leaders in transition, you’ll find out that “The 30-60-90 Rule Is a New Leader’s Most Powerful Tool for Success.” You’ll also find outlines for what you should do overall, such as “Nine Things Every Manager Should Do in the First 90 Days of Their Role.” Some experts spin it the other way—providing traps to avoid as a new leader.

But whichever expert advice resonates with you for your leadership transition, knowing what you stand for and how to articulate it will be invaluable. In other words, doing executive personal branding will support your success in your new role.

30-60-90-Day Plan for New Leaders Boosted by Executive Personal Branding

According to the HR technology firm ViGlobal, an executive often is asked to present their 30-60-90-day plan during the final stages of the interview process. “It’s a fantastic tool to show that you have a clearly defined strategy for the first three months on the job,” the article asserts.

“Even if this strategy isn’t a requirement during the interview phase, it’s a great way of detailing an action plan for your own benefit, and for the sake of your team or the employees that will be under your leadership,” the article continues. “Having this outline eases the transition and gives you a sense of direction in a period that can be very overwhelming.”

Ivyexec.com suggests that the third 30 days is the time within the 90 days when, “You are going to start having critical conversations and introducing your team to your leadership philosophy, building goals together with the team, and defining how your tenure will go. … Now you will reveal details about yourself and your plan, address problems, and implement changes.”

This begs the question, “reveal what details about yourself?” Enter executive personal branding and the ETA process from Revealing Genius.

This process first helps you excavate what you stand for and who you most want to serve—your executive personal brand. Then, it helps you learn how to tell others about the transformation that only you can facilitate for them. And finally, it helps you affirm your brand so you feel it in your bones and talk about it with conviction.

How Executive Personal Branding Supports Key Success Steps for Leaders in Transition

Whether you’re stepping into your leadership transition by following success steps or avoiding pitfalls, having gone through the ETA process will be an asset.

For example, this article from Forbes gives offers this advice to new leaders as step 8: “Identify your values.”

“Identify your values because when push comes to shove and you find yourself in a hard position to make tough choices, your values are what will guide you,” says a CEO quoted in the article. “My values are integrity, compassion, efficiency and tenacity. When I find myself losing sleep about an issue at work, I ask myself if I’m being honest with myself and having integrity with my team. I then ask if the proposed solution is the most effective one.”

Following the ETA process from Revealing Genius is a fantastic way not only to clarify your values for your own use, but also to get really good at talking about them with your team.

An article from The Alternative Board advises leaders in a new role to “Make a great first impression—and establish your leadership style.”

It quotes a CEO saying, “The new CEO’s first 90 days is a honeymoon period where she will be feted and indulged and tested. During this period, the CEO should make a favorable impression and instill confidence while she identifies challenges, determines her key objectives and drafts a timetable. When the CEO makes known her values and demonstrates her leadership style, everyone in the organization knows what to expect.”

Let’s be honest. No one wants to wait around while their leader struggles to articulate their vision in front of the group. (No one wants to work hard to understand their new leader’s LinkedIn profile either.) The ETA process is a time-proven method for learning to make a great first impression—and fast.
